DATO' Ir. of Penang Island
P. ANTHONY RAJENDRAN
We are an island city covering 305km² and with a population of an 805,200 people. The island is divided into 2 land masses on the east and west with a ridge or highland in the center from the north to the south. About 61.84% of the island is covered by forest reserves, hill land and green areas. The eastern part of the island where we are now is densely populated with considerable commercial activities, with the manufacturing industry hub at the south east of the island.
The illustrious history and remarkable development of Penang Island, a place we all hold dear to our hearts. Penang Island, known for its rich cultural heritage, diverse population, and vibrant economy, stands today as a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of its people.
Our journey begins in the late 18th century when Penang Island, then known as Prince of Wales Island, was established as a trading post by the British East India Company. Its strategic location at the crossroads of major maritime trade routes quickly transformed it into a bustling port, attracting traders and settlers from various parts of the world. This melting pot of cultures, ideas, and traditions laid the foundation for the unique multicultural society that Penang boasts today.
As we moved through the centuries, Penang evolved from a colonial outpost into a thriving urban center. The island's growth was propelled by its role as a free port, which fostered a dynamic economy centered around trade, shipping, and commerce. The construction of iconic landmarks during the colonial era provided the architectural backbone for what would become a modern, cosmopolitan city.
The establishment of the Penang Port Commission in the 1950s and the creation of the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone in the 1970s marked pivotal moments in our economic history, transforming Penang into a hub for manufacturing and technology.
Today, Penang Island stands as a beacon of development and innovation. Our commitment to sustainable growth, technological advancement, and cultural preservation has positioned Penang as a leading city not just in Malaysia, but on the global stage. The harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, reflected in our UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town and our state-of-the-art infrastructure, symbolizes the unique identity of Penang.
