Head of Government

Mr of City of Kisumu
Abala Wanga
City of Kisumu being a member of Cities with Nature initiative reaffirms our steadfast commitment to ensuring that the city’s growth is harmonious with nature and aligned with global best practices in conservation. We recognize that healthy ecosystems, wetlands, forests, wetlands fringes, catchment areas, and green corridors are vital not only for preserving biodiversity, but also for maintaining air and water quality, managing flood risks, and enhancing the well-being of our residents.
In our urban planning and development processes, we are encouraging inclusive, eco-friendly planning approaches by integrating nature-based solutions, such as restoring degraded catchment areas, expanding and connecting green spaces, protecting lakefront and wetland ecosystems, and promoting urban greening and tree planting along transport corridors, as core pillars of sustainable growth. We are working to embed these solutions into every sector: infrastructure, drainage, waste management, transport, housing, and public amenities.
We further commit to collaborating with communities, development partners, scientific institutions, and civil society to build capacity, mobilize resources, and ensure that our policies are informed by sound ecological science and local traditional knowledge. Through development control, spatial planning, and enforcement of environmental legislation, Kisumu will lead in climate-resilient, biodiversity-friendly urban development.
Our vision is a city where economic development and social progress biodiversity.
